Machinist Interview #001, Ryan Shore of Shore Machining

Give a quick, couple sentence intro stating who you are, what you do, and where people can find you on social media.

My name is Ryan and I am the owner of Shore Machining LLC. I currently run my shop part time, focusing mainly on job shop work and small production runs. You can find me on Instagram @ShoreMachining. You can also visit my website www.shoremachining.com and subscribe to my mailing list.

How long have you been in Manufacturing?

In 2008 I started learning about manufacturing while in school. I went to a vocational school for 3 years to learn the trade.

What is your biggest “Win” to date?

Adding the laser to my list of equipment. I was able to bring laser etching in house instead of sending parts out.

What is the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome thus far?

Working through my anodizing disaster. They scrapped nearly 300 parts of mine. It was a challenge to find a good anodizing company who takes pride in their work. I am currently using CT Anodizing and I've been very happy thus far. (@ctanodizing on Instagram)

What is the best shop purchase you’ve made in the last 6 months for $500 or less and why?

A cart with bins to organize my tools. I have each bin labeled and I have an excel sheet to track location and quantities.

What is your favorite, or go-to, cutting tool?

I’m a big fan of Helical tools. Their chip-breaker roughers are one of my favorite tools to use.

What is one tool or piece of equipment in your shop that you couldn’t live without?

I couldn’t live without my 5-axis indexer.  To have the ability to do complex parts in only two operations is a big help.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone just entering the manufacturing industry?

Keep up to date on technology for the industry. There is always new stuff coming out to make things easier or more efficient

What is one thing that most people may not know about you?

I'm a big ice hockey fan, and I actually played through high school.
